More than 60 shark species are targeted for their liver oil — many of which are endangered species. Shark liver oil is processed into an ingredient known as squalene or squalane, which is found in everyday cosmetic and personal care products like lip balm, sunscreen, makeup, and more. The good news is that plant-based squalene and squalane is readily available.

The Shark Free initiative works to protect sharks by advocating for the removal of shark ingredients from consumer products. We work with industry to shift sourcing to plant-based sustainable alternatives and we celebrate companies committed to protecting sharks. Shark Free builds consumer awareness and provides resources for shoppers to source products responsibly.
